Hemorrhoids develop in the
naturally occurring spongy cushions within the anal canal which,
in combination with the sphincter, are important for stool continence.
They can only perform their function inside the anal canal, at
the same level as the sphincter. When they are pushed outside of the anal canal
(prolapse), they are leaving their site of function. A definitive
repositioning – “lifting” – of the hemorrhoids
to their original site of function, is the goal of the Lungo
approach to treatment . Incisions and sutures are made in the
non-sensitive area of the rectal mucosa (shown in pink in pictures
1 and 2).
